Remodeling Update On The Farm Store

Officially, this is the last time you'll see me refer to it as "The Farm Store". From now on, it is The Studio or My Studio or That Wonderful Studio of Mine. Selfish with a capital Self.

If you want to see how this building from our old farm, was moved up to The Poor Farm recently, you may hop over HERE. Be sure to come back to the present when you're done.

And you're back. With winter creeping up quickly, supposed to get down into the 30's at night this next week, I pushed to finish at least the new paint job in my studio to be. I was fortunate to find two gallons of returned paint at Menards for just $5 each in a neutral tone. The lid showed a light tan but the inside paint was grey.

Might have had something to do with why it was returned.

Worked fab for me though, a good quality Dutch Boy paint that did an excellent job of covering  the old butter yellow color I painted it years ago. What I won't be painting again is the ceiling. It was a bear to do the first time around so it stays forever white. Unless one of you would like to volunteer, let me know and I'll leave the grey paint on the front porch.

Initially I thought I would repaint the beams and the window frames, but I believe the brick red will work since I plan to bring in a more rugs with those same hues. Mostly I'm leaving all the red as a matter of pride since I endured much flack from the men in our family when I made the butter yellow and red palate choice initially. It worked great when we were selling meat out of industrial freezers in the back of the room, and soap out of primitive cupboards. It was all very homespun and countrified.

Now though, I'm going for something darker, richer, more studious. Ideally it will look like Virgina Woolf's bedroom in the movie The Hours,  an all time favorite of mine just after The Wizard of Oz and just before The Big Chill.  I may not get the colors exactly right but I'm sure to nail the massive amount of paper piles. Love her filing system!

See that massive desk of hers on the right? Mine will be an old 1950's buffet of my parents. It sat in their home for decades, in my home for decades and has been collecting dust the last year in the old decrepit house on The Poor Farm. Keith will attempt to shorten its legs and remove a center drawer to accommodate my Jimmy Dean thighs. I'll show you that project soon.

I'm looking for an armchair like Virginia aka Nicole is lounging in, sure I can grab one at The Restore in Champaign or Bloomington. They have the best grandma furniture ever!

  1. Oh, that will be wonderful! Will you need to have a method of heating it? -Jenn

    1. Yes, eventually I will need heat. The building is wired for electricity but no wires yet run down to it other than drop cords for occasional use. Electric heaters really run up the electric bill so next year I'd like to put in a small wood stove. This year I won't use it much in the coldest months unless I can find a reasonable propane heater. Details, details.

  2. My people lived in the style that we refer to in England as 'Victorian Clutter'. There were piles of books, papers, pictures, etc, everywhere. I'm afraid that the habit has rubbed off on me, and the resulting mess is rather like Virginia's. I don't recommend it.

    1. MY people lived in the style we called 'Irish Rummage Sale' which involved empty popcorn bowls and ugly plastic chairs scattered about. I am fairly clean in my kitchen, living room areas but my tiny office at home is often littered thickly. I get very excited when I think of a great BIG area to litter freely.

  3. I wanted to clap my hands and jump up and down when you mentioned The Hours. It's my absolute favorite book and the movie was beautiful too. Jim Cunningham is brilliant.

    2. I can watch The Hours over and over and over. On any given day when I first wake, I can often be heard saying "I think I'll buy the flowers myself." I need a Virginia Woolf T-shirt. Yes I do.

  4. 'Victorian Clutter' eh?? My decorating has a name!!! I've always wanted a big over-stuffed 'Men's Club' wing chair in my space but dread trying to fit it in if I find one.
I think your Studio will be a source of much happiness & fun creating just what you want!!! What a score with that paint!! And re-purposing an old family piece is a great idea, especially when you have such a handy guy there. Will you line the walls with book shelves??? Looks good so far!! And what will you do with the lovely little 'office' in the corner of the 'House'.

    1. My current office petite, will be used for computer work and work on the coldest days since I won't have heat in MY studio for awhile. My plan is to have the big studio full of books, overstuffed chairs, mismatched rugs but empty of present day technology. No pc, no phone, no blogging. Just reading and writing, reading and writing.

    2. OMG you are going to live in my heaven. I want a room just like that. A room full of all my books a desk in the corner and in the centre of the room a lovely chair, foot stool and lamp. There I would just sit and read and read. Utter bliss. I love it.

  7. I love the term Victorian clutter, it describes what I have going on perfectly! This looks like a great space for a studio office. Hopefully you can get some heat going to it soon. I imagine it will be such a cozy space to work in and immerse yourself in your projects!
